Since 1950, the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) has been characterised by a trio of nature, culture and hospitality. It is Germany’s most popular, well-known tourist route and runs from Main up to the Alps. The name Romantic Road expresses what many foreign and national visitors feel when they see medieval towns or the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein: charm and the sense of stepping back in time. The Romantic Road offers travellers from Würzburg to Füssen the chance to experience the wealth of European history, art and culture. On the way from north to south, the landscape begins to change: river valleys, fertile farmland, forests, meadows and finally the mountains. From Würzburg and wine to the Tauber Valley and Rotenburg via the districts of Ries, Lechfeld and Pfaffenwinkel/Peiting to the famous royal castles. If travelling by car, mobile home or motorcycle, just follow the brown signs that link the 28 individual towns along the road. Cyclists can follow the green signs from Würzburg to Füssen along their own signposted long-distance Romantic Road cycle route, which spans some 460 km. This route is also part of the ADFC’s (German Bicycle Club) network of cycle routes and goes by the name D9. The blue information boards mark the long-distance hiking route, a truly pleasurable route that stretches almost 480 kilometres and passes through beautiful countryside and romantic towns.

This year the Buslinie Romantische Straße (Romantic Road Coach) is running between 10 April and 17 October 2017 from Frankfurt and Munich to Füssen and back. The coach also stops in Peiting. Use the daily coach service to plan your individual cycling or hiking tour along the Romantic Road.
